As a youngster Matheu joined Fèis Rois on their weekly classes programme with Alpha Munro, starting off life as a fiddler but quickly progressing to teach himself both whistle and guitar. He has since become one of the finest young musicians in Scotland today, a position recognised in his nomination for the “Best Up and Coming Musician” at the 2009 Trad Awards.
From the early tutorship of some of Scotland’s greatest traditional musicians including Aonghas Grant, Iain Fraser and Gordon Gunn to more “radical tuition” from Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton at the Taybank in Dunkeld every Tuesday night (you had to be there!) to the Traditional Music course at Benbecula, Matheu has continued to develop as both a musician and a composer.
He is a fluent Gaelic speaker having gone through Gaelic Medium Education and studied at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and has appeared in a number of studio, television and radio productions. Adding mandolin and banjo to his multi instrumental armoury,Matheu has worked with a number of traditional and Celtic musicians over the years including Anna Wendy Stevenson, Fred Morrison, Anxo Lorenzo, Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson, Salsa Celtica, Bagad Kemper, Paddy Keenan, Iain MacDonald, Siobhan Miller and Jeana Leslie.
He has toured extensively throughout Europe including Spain, France, Germany, Ireland, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia and the UK. |
