    Windward Away

    by Archie Fisher

This release is a Tale of Two Sessions and two colourful labels, Greentrax in the U.K. and Europe and Red House in North America.  The first element is “Windward Away” started back in 1998 when he met up with the late Bob Feldman of the American label Red House Records in St. Paul’s Minnesota while touring with John Renbourn.  Red House had also leased the “Sunsets” album and Bob then signed Archie for a new recording.  This session of songs had a protracted birth and never seemed complete and it took a piece of musical archaeology from Neil Ross at REL Records in Edinburgh to complete the picture.

While moving studio he came across a safety copy of an album that Archie had recorded while he was working with the revived pairing of Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy in the 1970s.  This had never seen the light of day and Archie had recorded several of the tracks on his later albums.  The accompanying note from Neil Ross asked “Is this the missing master?” and so it was christened.  Consequently this recording - which includes  8 of the tracks - spans twenty eight years of Archie’s writing and singing career, another lifetime, a second debut.

If you like this you'll love Cod Liver Oil And Orange Juice: The Transatlantic Anthology (2 CD set) by Hamish Imlach. Brilliant folk song

    Media Reviews

    Exquisitely articulate, intimate vocals..

The BBC broadcaster releases a first new album in 20 years. His exquisitely articulate, intimate vocals and fluent guitar fingerpicking give us 19 new recordings, some from a recently discovered 'lost master' from the Seventies. Fisher's new compositions have their characteristically moving mix of romance and sweet nostalgia, in songs of bucolic bliss, equine loyalty, and the eternal ebb and flow of love won and lost....Norman Chalmers.

Many will have waited a long time for this release and they won't be disappointed. The first thing to be said is that the post 1998 material could easily stand on its own merits: the recovered songs are just a great bonus. The songs are mostly Archie's and, as you would expect, they seem to be the result of a long gestation and are therefore very telling and memorable. The stand out track is Bonnie Border Lass, after a first hearing. Apart from the lovely guitar parts, we are also treated to some fine mandolin. Just wish the guitar tunings had been mentioned (but Archie's comments are a compensation.

So many of us singers were inspired by Archie and his music, first heard him some 40 odd years ago in a club in St Andrews, and we all owe him a lot for what he has done for Scottish music. Long overdue new release. Imaculate, sensitive, every track a winner, and an interesting contrast, and pitch, between the lost master tracks of youth and the recent recordings. Archie is uneque and this collection of his songs are truly reflective of the man and his music. More please sooner rather than again later !!

So many of us singers were inspired by Archie and his music, and in my youth he inspired me also. This album could have been recorded years ago..as Archie's voice is still as warm and tuneful as ever. If you don't buy it borrow a friends copy and LISTEN to the voice of "Scottish folk music"...
