Gaelic Psalm Singers: Salm Vol. 1

    by Compilation

The project entitled Salm (Gaelic for Psalm) has been the passion and the brainchild of Lewis musician  Calum Martin. Gaelic psalm singing is a unique music form: a type of music that those brought up in Scotland's Western Isles, within the Presbyterian religious tradition, know  well from childhood and beyond. This unique musical style was recorded over two nights in October 2003 from the Back Free Church in Lewis, unrehearsed and unaccompanied. An amazingly moving experience for those taking part. Twelve of the finest *precentors leading a large congregation in the singing of more than a dozen of the best loved psalms

*The format of psalm singing revolves around the precentor. He is the person that puts out the line and then waits for the response from the congregation. The practise of precenting is not exclusive to Gaelic or the Gaelic Presbyterian tradition.
