KARINE Polwart’s debut solo album takes a different tack from the more traditional-based approach she adopts with Malinky. Here she moves toward a more contemporary sound - branching out with a pop, country or jazz feel at times - but without sacrificing the overall rootsy ambiance of the project.
Polwart has already proven her qualities as a singer many times over, but she also emerges on this disc as a humane and literate songwriter, with a genuine gift for conjuring up memorable lines and catchy melodies.
The largely acoustic instrumentation (guitars, electro-harp, double bass, drums, plus various guests) gives the music an airy but energised grace.
