From an early age music has played an important role in Kyle’s life and he has been influenced by a wide range of artists and styles, ranging from his favourite childhood track Stevie’s First Bar by The Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band (a pipe band that he rates as the best in the world and one that he aspires to play with one day), through to the collaborative work of Jay-Z and Linkin Park.
At the age of 14, Kyle was amongst the first intake of pipers for the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland. The first intake included boys and girls from across the length and breadth of Scotland, and young pipers from England and Ireland, many with significant piping achievements already to their names. During his period with the NYPB, Kyle rose to the position of Pipe Major and gained the opportunity to travel as far as Mexico to perform and also appeared on Blue Peter.
In 2007, Kyle formed the world's first bagpipe boy band, TNT - The New Tradition - with two friends, Keith Bowes and Alasdair Henderson. The aim for the band was to make bag piping cool with funky beats and sizzling dance moves in the hope that the style of music would attract a new generation of listeners. As a member of TNT - The New Tradition, Kyle won the prestigious Danny Kyle Open Stage competition at Celtic Connections in 2007.
In the summer of 2009 he won the Breton Championships with the Bagad Cap Caval Pipe Band at the Lorient festival in France. Kyle is a finalist for the 2010 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the year and now performs worldwide with the famous Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Described as the new Jock and Roll! the group is in much demand performing all over the world from the USA to China at the biggest of events and festivals. |
