The names of Jimmy McHugh and Eoin Kelly are synonymous with traditional Irish music in Glasgow. A decision taken by them in January 1957 to begin the first branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann outside of Ireland had a profound effect on the future of the Irish Community in Glasgow. Their vision brought opportunity to the people of Glasgow and created settings which infused confidence in the Irish community and provided a fantastic outlet for the development of Irish traditional music. Jimmy McHugh born in Co. Tyrone and brought up in Donegal, a county inextricably linked with the city of Glasgow, was a master fiddler of his generation. Jimmy had material success to accompany his anecdotal talent in the form of the coveted All-Ireland Senior fiddle championship of 1957, a feat highlighted by the fact that the title didn’t return to Glasgow until 2009 when Johnny Canning won in Tullamore, Co. Offaly - a testament to the hard work of Eoin Kelly and, current musical director Frank McArdle as well as the culture created by the families and teachers involved throughout the decades. Eoin Kelly proved to be a stalwart of the Irish Minstrels Branch of Comhaltas, constantly infusing confidence and drive in younger musicians while maintaining the integrity of the music and the culture of the branch. His influence can be weighed in the strength of the branch today. The musicians appearing on this CD have been influenced both directly and indirectly by the work of Jimmy McHugh, Eoin Kelly and latterly Frank McArdle as well as the numerous teachers and volunteers involved from the outset. The vision of Eoin and Jimmy was a catalyst for music, the music a catalyst for performance, performance a catalyst for opportunity and within this mix the Friday Night sessions began. The Victoria Bar, based on Glasgow’s Clydeside in the Bridgegate is in an area rich in the folk and historical culture of Glasgow. Paddy’s Market was on its doorstep, a place utilised by poor Irish immigrants escaping famine and economic hardship to earn a living. Within a stone’s throw of the Gorbals, an area heavily influenced by Irish immigration, music was a natural outlet in the local pubs and clubs. Throughout the decades musicians, venues, parties, festivals, gigs, friendships and tunes passed to and fro. When visiting festivals in Ireland to this current day musicians and people of a certain generation will remember with fondness the times and craic created by Jimmy McHugh, Eoin Kelly and many others. They will ask if you know Jimmy’s son Benny, following the fiddling legacy of his father, comment that Frank McArdle is doing a fantastic job with the Irish Minstrels CCE and remember the great Friday night sessions they enjoyed in the Victoria Bar and more recently The Ivory.....
