Capercaillie - Glenfinnan, Songs of the '45 (audio CD): These songs retrace the steps of those who came down from the mountains 250 years ago to follow Prince Charles Edward Stuart on his ill-fated mission to restore his family to the throne. The bulk of the songs on this CD were recorded in the summer of 1995 for a specially commissioned TV programme made by BBC Scotland. The programme, filmed at Glenfinnan and titled 'Raising the Standard'*, was made for the 250th anniversary of the last Jacobite rebellion.
Two additional tracks on the album are taken from Capercaillie's music for the ITV production 'High Tops' (The Natural World) and the ITV documentary 'The Making Of Rob Roy'.
Featuring Donald Shaw - keyboards; Karen Matheson - vocals; Manus Lunny - bouzouki, vocals; Charlie McKerron - fiddle; John Saich - bass; Marc Duff - whislte, bodhran; Fred Morrison - pipes, whistle; Wilf Taylor - drums; Iain Murry - percussion; Ray Fean - drums on 'Clo Mhic Ille Mhicheil'
*Prince Charles (also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) initially landed from France on Eriskay in the Western Isles. He then travelled to the mainland in a small rowing boat, coming ashore at Loch nan Uamh, just west of Glenfinnan. Here he was met a small number of MacDonalds. He waited at Glenfinnan for a number of days as more MacDonalds, Camerons, McPhees and Macdonnells arrived. When he judged he had enough support, he climbed the hill and the McPhees raised his royal standard, on Monday 19 August 1745, and claimed the Scottish and the English thrones in the name of his father James Stuart ('the Old Pretender').
