Bobby MacLeod came from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. He broadcast with his band for the first time in 1949 and was the first West Coast band leader to emerge on the Scottish dance music programmes on the BBC. His use of the second accordion as a rhythm instrument set the pattern most band leaders have adopted ever since. Bobby was a piper prior to taking up the accordion and his piping knowledge and skill came through clearly when he included pipe tunes in his selections for dances such as the Gay Gordons, Barn Dances etc. His perfect timing, phrasing and subtle turn of a note set him worlds apart. He was the man who pointed who pointed Scottish dance music in a different direction and gave it the West Coast sound and style. Bobby MacLeod died in January 1991.
