Emily Smith – Traiveller’s Joy: Emily's latest album release focusses on the rich song heritage from the Scottish travelling community. Her refreshing re-interpretations as well as new self-penned songs make this a milestone album in her singing career. There are many highlights but her solo unaccompanied singing of 'What a Voice' - a song made famous by the late great Lizzie Higgins - is wonderful.
Guest musicians on the album feature an international line up including Nashville’s Stuart Duncan on fiddle, whom Emily met when performing on ‘Transatlantic Sessions’, Dublin’s Alan Doherty on flute and whistles, Australia’s James Fagan on bouzouki and Icelandic/Scot Signy Jakobsdottir on percussion with regular band mates Duncan Lyall on double bass and producer Jamie McClennan on guitar and fiddle.
"Emily Smith can boast one of the finest traditional Scots voices around, pure and poised..." Jim Gilchrist, The Scotsman
Media Reviews
Emily Smith is surely the most impressive young instrumentalist and songwriter singing in English
....She shows her emotional range on the covers, from a thoughtful, exquisite setting for Roll on Lovely Doon, by the 18th-century poet Robert Hettrick, to a slow, quietly pained, piano-backed treatment of Richard Thompson's Waltzing's for Dreamers. There are hundreds of cover versions of his songs, but this is a classic....Robin Denselow, The Guardian
'a lovely voice'
"....a lovely voice and a fine interpretative singer, especially of the Scottish tradition...." Rob Adams, The Herald
