This beautiful CD is dedicated to the memory of Martyn Bennett (). Produced by Calum Martin, it was recorded live in Glasgow Cathedral on 21st January 2005.
"RARELY has Celtic Connections’ name seemed more apt than while witnessing this encounter between the singing congregations of Back Free Church, on Lewis, and the Mount Zion Church in Killin, Alabama. It arose from the theory that the call-and-response structures of African-American gospel music derived in large part from traditional Gaelic psalm singing, brought over by Scottish immigrants to the American South.
Other hypotheses concerning this uniquely Hebridean form, where members of the kirk "line out" the texts in response to a precentor’s cues, suggest further intriguing connections, possibly to the very earliest forms of Christian music.
Be that as it may, the exchange between the two churches - the Back delegation having visited Alabama last year - has clearly resulted in a true meeting of minds, souls and music. With each choir performing separately in turn, then joining forces for the show’s final segment, it was fascinating to compare and contrast".....Sue Wilson, The Scotsman, January 2005.
