We are so sorry to report that master musician, composer and amazingly brave young man Martyn Bennett has died. There will be more information at Martyn's website later today. |

| In Martyn's passing we have lost one of Scotland's great innovators. His music was an inspiration to me and many others. He was also a lovely guy with time for everyone he met. Our thoughts are with his mother Margaret and wife Kirsten. |

Yup - I wondered what was happening to/with Martyn and I'm very, very sad to hear that someone so young, talented, committed and "maverick" (in the nicest possible sense) has lost his fight. Cancer's a bastard.
I'm sure we're all thinking about, and in my case saying a wee prayer for, Margaret, Kirsten, everyone that was close to Martyn - and of course, Martyn himself (who is no doubt working out how to fuse angelic harps with some funky dance beats as we speak).

| There's been too many losses in the past few months, but of all, I think this one is the worst...he was far too young and had so much left to say. The world has lost one of its originals and the hereafter has gained a new, bright star. I truly wish it weren't so. My condolences to his family, those who knew him and all who loved him. |

Sad news indeed. I remember Martyn since he was a young lad being a regular attender at the Edinburgh Folk club in the eighties.
He was a wonderful musician and genuine guy who would never ignore you.
Condolences to Margaret, Kirsten and family. |

| You're absolutely right there Simon - Martyn was one very special person, and he inspired me on a personal level as well as a musical one. There are so many things that simply would not be part of Scottish music today if Martyn hadn't been there. I will miss a beautiful soul. |

was very sad to hear this as thought grit was outstanding and had felt it could have been really successful in attracting a diferent audience given the chance. when i lent it to a friend who had never before enjoyed traditional music he was really impressed.
martin did not gain the recognition i felt he could have got and he may have got in time. |

| Even though we knew it was coming this loss is still so hard to bear. A brilliant musician and a warm gentle thoughtful man - we will not see his like again. |

Transferred from another thread
From "Boston"I'm deeply saddened about martyns passing.
His music was a big inspiration to me. Another legend is gone. However his music lives on. He was a man way ahead of his time. More importantly he was a sound dude. His first album still sounds so cutting edge. Unfortunately it went out of print. Marytyn was nice enough to send me a burned copy. Someone must get it reprinted. Mabey footstompin could bring it out again?? |
