    1.NEW ARRIVALS  AT FOOT STOMPIN'

BY THE RIGHT QUICK MARCH - The Edinburgh Military Tattoo Audio CD has been marched into the office! The CD of this year’s spectacle is now in stock! If you are fond of the sound of the bagpipes, love the Royal Marines brass band, then this CD is for you! We were on the castle Esplanade for the first night of the show, as proud as can be, and found it very stirring (despite being nearly drowned by the bucketing rain!) No doubt about it, hearing the skirl of the Massed Pipes and Drums coming out of the old castle twang the heartstrings every time. £12.60 (£13.99 for first time customers).

Please note: The 2008 Edinburgh Military Tattoo DVD will be available to buy at Foot Stompin’ in late October

IT’S CONCERT TIME!! The Kris Drever ‘Live’ DVD has just arrived. This full band performance of Kris’s highly acclaimed album 'Black Water' was filmed at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow in January 2008. It feels just like going to a great concert! The star of the show is guitarist and BBC Horizon Award winner Kris Drever. He’s got, John McCusker (fiddle), Ian Carr (guitar), Andy Cutting (diatonic accordion), Donald Shaw (Wurlitzer) and Roddy Woomble, Heidi Talbot, Karen Matheson (backing vocals) with him. Some lineup!  The ‘Black Water’ CD was definitely special and we think you will enjoy watching Kris and his band in full flow.  The DVD has lots of extra features including the inimitable Sandy Wright's with his original great version of 'Steel & Stone' . £15.29 (£16.99  for first time customers).

BONES & DRONES!! Blackwood & Hickory from the Mid Argyll Pipe Band takes its name from their sell-out '80th Anniversary' concert. Recorded in 2007, this bold CD steps into new territory for a pipe band with youthful and innovative arrangements. You will appreciate that this is a great young band when we say they were winners of ‘Scottish Pipe Band of the Year’ at the Scots Trad Music Awards. £11.25 (£12.50  for first time customers).

ROYAL MUSIC!! Clarsach na Banrighe is a CD of early harp music played by Simon Chadwick on an exact replica of the famous "Queen Mary" harp. The original (regarded as one of Scotland's national treasures) can be seen in the National Museum in Edinburgh. The description of the instrument sounds amazing down to its intricate 'latten' brass, sterling silver and 18 carat gold decoration. The music is medieval and 18th century Scottish and includes the complete repertory of John Robertson of Lude, Perthshire. It was he who owned and played the 'Queen Mary' harp in the early 18th century. There’s great sleeve notes packed with fascinating information from Simon who is a specialist in the traditions, history and performance of Scottish and Irish harp music. £11.70 (£12.99 for first time customers)

CLASS ACT!! The Royal Oak - Best of Folk: If you are fancying a wee singsong The Royal Oak in Edinburgh is the place to go. It is probably the number-one pub in Scotland for folk singing. Situated in Infirmary Street in the Capital's southside there’s music all the way, both in the public bar at street level and downstairs in the lounge. (which is also home to the world's smallest folk club) This CD, featuring 14 singers and groups who frequent the hostelry, boasts sleeve notes by the Edinburgh author and folk fan, Ian Rankin. £11.25 (£12.50  for first time customers).

BY POPULAR  REQUEST!! Tir Aluinn – The Lochies: At the end of the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s, Gaelic folkgroups emerged, inspired by the wider folk revival. The quartet of John Macmillan and Donnie MacInnes (vocals); Angus MacMillan (guitar) and Steven Carcary (keyboard, accordion, bass and drums) known as ‘The Lochies’ were a folk group from the Island of Lewis and we think you will enjoy their collection of new and old favourites. £11.25 (£12.50  for first time customers).

    2. Treasure from the National Library of Scotland
A Pride of Islands: A DVD with three wonderful colour films from the Scottish Screen Archive. The films depict the scenery, history and culture of Scotland's islands. The first film from 1957, ‘Enchanted Isles’, narrated by Fulton MacKay takes you on the steamer from Oban. You can see the islands of Iona and Staffa as well as the awe-inspiring ‘Fingal's Cave’ and Tobermory in Mull. You will also enjoy wool-spinning in Harris, a beautiful Hebridean sunset, South Uist and Eriskay. Re-trace the steps of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and see the birthplace of Flora MacDonald near Lochboisdale. £17.99 (£19.99 for first time customers).

    4. Book Feature: Songs and Ballads of Dundee:
You will find this book so much more than a song collection – it is also a fascinating read. It is a classic collection of over seventy folk songs and ballads. There’s music and extensive notes with carefully chosen photographs to illustrate key periods in the history. Throughout the songs there unfolds the story of the men of the sea. The great clipper fleets, the whaling ships, the rise and fall of the jute mills and the women who supplied their workforce are all in the book. This is also the story of the great characters of Dundee. Let’s not forget Bonnie Dundee through McGonagall to the elusive Piper O' Dundee, with, of course, the full rich tapestry of worthies and rogues. The result is a marvellous and unique picture of the vibrant life and times of one of Scotland's most colourful and distinctive communities. Full of humour and life, these songs, anecdotes and stories convey, as no dry narrative history can, the energy and character of the people and place that is Dundee.
Collected and arranged by Nigel Gatherer with a foreword by Peter Shepheard
£8.99 (£9.99  for first time customers).

    7. Reviews
Live Concert – Deaf Shepherd at the Acoustic Music Centre, Edinburgh Fringe. Jim Gilchrist  The Scotsman

YOU know what to expect with a Deaf Shepherd gig: a high-energy line-up – seven-strong on this occasion – of Highland pipes, whistles and twin fiddles propelled by guitar, bouzouki and bodhran, with the tempo generally notched up to full speed ahead.  And that's pretty well the formula at their St Bride's appearance, leavened occasionally by the fine singing of John Morran. Finlay MacDonald opens the show with a lordly pibroch prelude and they're off, like a whippet out of a trap at the kind of rate you might expect for the finale (and, yes, that was pretty fast too). Reels, and particularly pipe jigs, were the tunes of choice, one set especially agile, with the jig passing deftly between the pipes, fiddles (Claire McLaughlin and Gillian Frame) and whistles (Marc Duff) as the rhythm section cranked up the tension with the help of Mark McGuire's bodhran.....Read the full review:

CD: In A Bleeze – Siobhan Miller & Jeana Leslie: Reviewed for Scotland on Sunday by Norman Chalmers
Young Siobhan Miller is a great singer of traditional song. With singer, pianist and fiddler Jeana Leslie she's formed a special partnership – heard to beautiful, poignant effect in their spare, voices-with-piano setting of the Willie Scott favourite 'Time Wears Awa'. Elsewhere Leslie takes solo vocals in the lightly accompanied, atmospheric 'Three Sailors', Miller sings a cappella, and the tracks are cleverly arranged, as in the voices-in-the-head 'Bedlam Boys'. This pair deserve all the awards they are already starting to garner.

CD: Windward Away – Archie Fisher. Customer Review 4 stars
So many of us singers were inspired by Archie and his music, and in my youth he inspired me also. This album could have been recorded years ago..as Archie's voice is still as warm and tuneful as ever. If you don't buy it borrow a friends copy and LISTEN to the voice of "Scottish folk music"...cheerydavie

CD: Aye! – Skelpaig: Reviewed for The List  by Kenny Mathieson
Liley's individual and inventive fiddle lines and Adam 's energised pipes and flute soar over the solid foundation provided by Sutherland 's rhythmically poised and harmonically acute guitar work (guest Peter Hunter adds mandolin and mandola on a couple of tracks). The material is drawn from a variety of sources, both traditional and contemporary, and includes several of Liley's attractive compositions. A very promising debut....Kenny Mathieson...

CD: Far, Far From Ypres – Various Artists: Reviewed for The Scotsman by Kenny Mathieson
THIS thoughtfully constructed but rather specialised double CD set documents songs, poems and pipe music from the First World War. It is intended as a tribute to soldiers of the UK and Commonwealth who fought and died in the battlefields of Europe, with a strong but not exclusively Scottish slant. Disc one features The Scottish Pals Singers (essentially the McCalmans and friends) performing songs sung by the troops and music hall pieces. Disc two draws on songs about the war by the likes of Eric Bogle, Dick Gaughan and The McCalmans. http://www.scotsman.com
